Long before portraying Enzo Morelli in The Streetsweeper, Michael had established himself as a remarkably versatile American performer. An accomplished opera singer and stage actor, he possessed the powerful voice, dramatic instincts and commanding presence that would ultimately make him uniquely suited to play Enzo — an opera singer whose love for his family becomes central to the film’s story.

Michael made his Broadway debut in 1956 in Bells Are Ringing and went on to build an impressive theatrical career. His Broadway work included Zorba, Man of La Mancha, Johnny Johnson, Music Is and Tovarich, where he appeared alongside the legendary Vivien Leigh.

His career eventually carried him from the Broadway stage to Hollywood. Michael accumulated more than 30 screen acting credits, appearing in some of American television’s most recognizable series. His credits included Dark Shadows, Kojak, Hill Street Blues, T.J. Hooker, Falcon Crest, Frasier, Gilmore Girls and Touched by an Angel, along with feature-film work.

Millions of television viewers also saw Michael on one of the most celebrated sitcoms in television history — Seinfeld. In the memorable 1995 episode “The Maestro,” Michael portrayed Ciccio, part of Jerry’s unforgettable quest to rent a home in Tuscany.

But The Streetsweeper gave Michael a role that seemed almost written for the entirety of his remarkable career. As Enzo Morelli, Michael could draw upon virtually every chapter of his professional life — Hollywood actor, Broadway performer and opera singer — bringing authenticity and emotional power to a character whose own life is intertwined with music, sacrifice and family.

Michael Cavalieri is a veteran Hollywood actor, writer, director, and award-winning filmmaker whose career spans major studio motion pictures, acclaimed television, and celebrated independent cinema.

Cavalieri made his feature-film breakthrough opposite Academy Award winner Hilary Swank in Columbia Pictures’ The Next Karate Kid. He later appeared alongside Hollywood legends Bruce Willis and Christopher Walken in acclaimed director Walter Hill’s Last Man Standing. His television credits include appearances on some of television’s most recognizable series, including The Sopranos, ER, NYPD Blue, Cold Case, Numb3rs and Shark.

Cavalieri has also built an impressive independent-film career, earning critical recognition for starring roles in The Stonecutter, My Brother Jack, In the Kingdom of the Blind, the Man with One Eye Is King and West of Brooklyn, opposite Joe Mantegna. My Brother Jack, in which Cavalieri starred as Vincent Casale alongside Freddy Rodriguez and Marco Leonardi, became an award-winning festival film with five wins.

His performance in The Stonecutter drew particular acclaim from Los Angeles Times film critic Kevin Thomas, who praised Cavalieri’s commanding “presence and focus.”

Cavalieri later stepped behind the camera with Ritornato, a deeply personal film that he wrote, directed and starred in. Inspired by his Sicilian heritage and filmed on location in Sicily, the project received a special grant supported by Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of Avengers: Endgame, along with the National Italian American Foundation and Italian Sons and Daughters of America.

Ritornato went on to earn international festival recognition, including Best Dramatic Original at WorldFest-Houston and the Audience Award for Best Film at NewFilmmakers New York. Cavalieri was also nominated for directing honors, while the film was selected for the prestigious Taormina Film Festival in Sicily.
